A bag of trail mix is the perfect crunchy, protein-packed snack. The only problem: many packaged varieties contain tons of added sugar and even candy (we’re looking at you, M&Ms). All that extra sweetness isn’t ideal for a snack that’s meant to keep you fueled and moving, whether you’re hiking or just trying to get through an afternoon at the office. Luckily, it’s incredibly easy to make your own trail mix at home. Doing so means you’re able to monitor everything that goes into your snack so you can fill it with healthy ingredients (think: nuts, seeds, and dried fruit), and will also save you money. Win-win!
In our tropical trail mix recipe, the star ingredients are almonds, cashews, and pistachios. Almonds are a great source of healthy fats, fiber, and protein. Also good: they’re packed with vitamin E, which may help fight inflammation and ward off lung cancer. Pistachios are another super-healthy nut, especially since they contain fewer calories than many other varieties. And cashews contain magnesium, folate, vitamin K, and iron (10% of your daily needs in one serving). Another benefit? The filling fiber, protein, and satiating healthy fats in these types of nuts can help stave off hunger and promote weight loss.
In addition to nuts, this homemade trail mix recipe also includes antioxidant-rich dried papaya and vitamin-packed pineapple for satisfying sweetness, along with a touch of honey. That said, if you want to tone down the sweetness, you can always skip the honey or reduce the amount of dried fruit. Feel free to swap in (or out!) as many ingredients as you wish to make the recipe your own. But we do highly recommend including our spice mix of allspice and ginger to help pump up the flavor.
